Brownfield is a neat, orderly little city that was established
as the Terry County seat in 1904 and named for Col. Benjamin Franklin
Terry, Confederate leader of Terry's Texas Rangers. Situated at
the intersection of five highway routes, Brownfield is the hub for
the area’s farming, livestock, and oil production.

Brownfield has several great local eateries, including
The Cub Drive-In (806-637-8297), where old-fashioned
burgers are the specialty. J.B. Steaks 806-637-7471)
is the place for sit-down sirloins, and two Tex-Mex joints stand
out – El Palacio (806-637-0276). There are
four motel/hotel options, highlighted by the Best Western
(806-637-9471). Outside of town, ponder the death of the plains
settlement of Gomez (6 miles west), which dwindled
away in 1904 after Brownfield won the Terry County seat election
from Gomez by 5 votes. The Terry County Historical Museum
showcases the old pioneering times.
