Notes
In town eat at the Cowboy Cafe (806-655-1124)
or the Texas Star Restaurant (806-655-9379). Call
to make sure it’s open, but it’s worth a trip to Umbarger
for the specials at Rafter G Bar-B-Que (806-499-3347).
Some of their specialties are Thursday steak, Friday catfish, and
Saturday brisket and pork ribs. The Hudspeth House (806-655-9800)
is one of the state's oldest bed and breakfasts. The Panhandle-Plains
Historical Museum (806-651-2244) on the campus of West
Texas A&M University is a fabulous 300,000-square-foot museum
that covers Panhandle history all the way back to the Jurassic Period,
160 million years ago. For outdoor activities check out the 15,000-plus
acres of scenic landscape at Palo Duro Canyon State Park,
where the Red River has carved through the tabletop expanse of the
High Plains and walls plunge a thousand feet to the canyon floor.
Also find one of the major waterfowl refuges on the Central Flyway
in Buffalo Lake National Wildlife Refuge, a winter
haven for over a million ducks and around 80,000 geese.
