At one time, the rambling golfer would never have stopped off in Hockley, since the Tennwood Country Club course was open only to employees of the Tenneco Corporation. However, in 1998 the facility was sold to a California company that hired Tom Fazio to redesign the course, which was then renamed Houston Oaks and opened to the public. That put this otherwise nondescript town just 36 miles northwest of Houston on the Texas golf map.

The Stockman's Restaurant (555-555-5555) in Waller, TX is the closest sit-down joint-a popular steakhouse and the best option if you don't hang around the Houston Oaks grill for post-round festivities. And if Houston isn't in the cards for nightlife, make the relatively new Super 8 Motel (979-826-4700) on US 290 your home away from home.
