Carlton Gipson designed Cinco Ranch in the early 1990s. This highly touted residential project was named the National Project of the Year for 1993 by the National Association of Home Builders Institute.
The centerpiece of the community is Gipson's 7,044-yard golf course, which features an ocean of water that impacts play on 16 of 18 holes. For the most part, the holes are straight and open, with minimal trees framing the paths to the greens. The greens are unique because of the unusually shaped bunkers that create very different short game challenges from what one normally finds.
One of the best holes is No. 4, a 557-yard par 5 that features an approach shot over water into an elevated green. In addition to the water, the green is fronted by a bunker that is at least 10 feet below the hole. This requires a phenomenal, blind bunker shot for an up-and-down.
Getting there : From I-10 west, take Cinco Ranch Blvd. and head south to the course
