Brownsville

Elevation : 35
Population : 147,545

Established in 1846 after General Zachary Taylor built Fort Brown as the national boundary to Mexico, Brownsville is the Rio Grande Valley's largest-and Texas' southernmost-city. In Brownsville the traveling golfer can take advantage of the sub-tropical climate, proximity to Mexico, and excellent golf courses.

Notes
Reserve your room at the Holiday Inn Fort Brown, which is convenient if you decide to cross the border. But before you venture to Matamoros, consider the tasty fried shrimp at the old-fashioned Oyster Bar (956-542-9786), or chile con queso at Antonio's Mexican Village (956-542-6504). For gringo fun in old Mexico, Garcia's is more high-toned and closer to the Caliente off-track betting bar, but Blanca White's tends to get a little rowdier. The Drive Inn has been around since 1916 and is still the best place to eat in Matamoros.
