Located just north of Laredo, the Max A. Mandel Municipal Golf Course overlooks the Rio Grande River. Golfers can enjoy stunning views throughout the course but especially on the four holes that play directly on the waterfront. The par-72 layout sprawls across 270 acres of rugged south Texas landscape. The terrain is covered with 100-year-old mesquite trees and two vast arroyos, which were incorporated into the layout. There are also a variety of elevation changes across the landscape that can be challenging but the design manages to seamlessly blend dramatic features and playability. Crafted by Robert Trent Jones Jr., the golf course appeals to a range of skill levels from novices to frequent golfers. Risk-reward opportunities can be found throughout Mandel, giving both short and long hitters a variety of ways to play each hole.

The course is in excellent condition, both fairways and greens. The greens are challenging, with some fantastic breaks and fast. Good putts are rewarded. The short par 4's are truly great and all par 3's are different and all look easy but no such thing. The staff is friendly and the restaurant staff is always willing to please. The green fees are affordable and pace of play is acceptable. This is one of the best and interesting courses that I have played and I have played quite a few. I recommend it. It's a must if you live south of Austin and north of Brownsville.

The service at the restaurant was horrible. I waited 15 minutes for server in an empty restaurant. Order was placed (burger and fries) and 20 minutes later it arrived and it was disgusting.

Great course. Fairways and tee boxes are immaculate. The greens looked like had been aerated about 2 weeks prior so they were inconsistent. But it is the time for most courses to do this so I was not surprised. The staff was friendly and helpful. My only knock was having to pay for range balls but that is a minor knock. Don't miss the chance to play this course if the opportunity presents itself.

Great course, still in it's infancy. Greens are challenging. Fairways are in great shape, and the elevation changes make for an even better experience. My new favorite course. The only reason I didn't give it 5-stars is because the clubhouse isn't finished yet. But from the looks of it, it will be just as good as the course. This is a must play course.
