The Palms is an 18-hole public course that sits at the northern edge of Mercedes in a flood plain. This is a long, intimidating links-style course with plenty of bunkers, elevated greens, thick rough, and even a few palm trees. Four sets of tees offer drastically different rounds. The tips (black) play from 7,114 yards, while the forward men's tees (white), play from only 5,694 yards.

The 446-yard par 4 No. 5 is the number one handicap, but the signature hole is the 11th, a 393-yard par 4 that requires a tee shot over water to a narrow fairway with out-of-bounds stakes on either side of the fairway. Even once you get it on the green you're not home for good, as it is severely sloped from back to front.

Getting there : From Harlingen, take the 77/83 Exwy. west toward McAllen. When you come to FM 491, exit and turn north. Then drive 2.5 miles to the course and look for the entrance on the right side of the road.

Love the place, the course offers challenges that the pros would take a step back and scratch their head. Great time to pass the time playing.
