Despite not remaining a premier resort as originally planned, Canyon Springs still offers 18 holes of spectacular public golf that wind through several residential communities. Gary Player protégé Thomas Walker laid this one out, and he's received accolades for the course's natural feel, despite the route through the homes. His design features giant oak trees; huge, undulating greens; prominent bunkering; and elevated tees. Throughout the round you'll face a good combination of split fairways, forced carries, and fairways that are both generous and unforgiving. Rock formations dot the landscape, and thick, gnarly rough awaits anything off the fairway.
Each side's finishing hole features a waterfall. The 18th is the most talked about-a 400-yard par 4 that plays from an elevated tee down to a fairway bordered by a creek and waterfalls.
The most intriguing hole is No. 18, a 400-yard par 4 featuring an elevated tee box and a fairway punctuated by a creek and waterfall.
Other notes: Both Golf Digest and Golf Magazine lauded Canyon Springs as one of America's best new public courses in 1998.
Getting there : From San Antonio, take Highway 281 north to Evans. Turn left on Evans and find the course 3.5 miles away.
