San Antonio

Elevation : 701
Population : 1,182,840

One of Texas' most romantic and historic cities, the old Spanish town of San Antonio dates back to 1718 when it served as a way station for road trippers on their way to East Texas missions. The city grew around the scenic San Antonio River, which gave life to the settlers who were busy founding missions, fighting Apaches and Comanches, and generally working on the important colonization efforts of the day. Continually embattled in those early days, Texas' most defining moment occurred at the Alamo when Santa Anna raised hell, only to lose control a few years later when Texans finally prevailed in the Battle of Salado.

Today San Antonio is the gateway to either South Texas or Central Texas depending on which way you're headed.

Notes
When close to downtown, before you pay tribute to your Texas roots at The Alamo, have a beer and check out the museum at the old Lone Star Beer Brewery. The now world-famous River Walk is practically next door with more dining and drinking options than you can imagine. Reserve a room at La Mansion Del Rio (800-292-7300), the river's oldest and most distinguished hotel, take a good look at the design of any of the 35 historic bridges that span the river, then pick a place to settle in for the evening festivities. The more macho should hit the Esquire Bar, a rowdy, local establishment on Commerce Street.
On the north side, stop by Retama Park for nefarious speculations on the ponies, then find the Hangin' Tree Saloon (210-651-5812) for cold beer and great Texas music.
