Victoria
Elevation : 93
Population : 61,579
Take US 181 southeast of San Antonio for 60 miles to Kenedy, then wind
your way through a variety of roads through Goliad and then on to Victoria.
Once there, drive around "Old Victoria" and admire the beautiful
restored homes, many which are national landmarks.
The city was a crossroads for early explorers Cabeza de Vaca and la Salle,
and in 1824 Martin De Leon received permission Mexico to establish a settlement
between the Guadalupe River and the Lavaca River. Originally named Nuestra
De Guadalupe De Victoria, the name was shorted to Victoria after the Texas
Revolution. Agriculture and oil and gas are the primary industries.

Notes
Plan your visit in late October for the International Armadillo
Confab and Exposition, complete with dillo racing and a chili cook-off.
Coleto Creek Lake and Lake Texana State Park are near by. If you're
hungry, the popular spot is the Rosebud Fountain and Grill (361-573-5111),
where a ham-and-cheese sandwich might hit the spot. Also try Tex-Mex at
