El Paso
Elevation : 3,762
Population : 615,032
As Texas' fourth-largest and westernmost city, located halfway between
Houston and Los Angeles, El Paso offers so much for the avid golfer that
it should probably be marketed more as a premier golf destination with
the likes of Phoenix or San Antonio. Out here the desert offers over 300
days of sunshine per year, outstanding shopping, authentic Mexican food,
impressively old historic sites, and plenty of adventures across the border.
Five public facilities with a total of 117 golf holes are available in
El Paso, highlighted by the spectacular Painted Dunes course that
is consistently ranked as one of the top public facilities in the state.
The more connected golfer has the option of playing three quality private
courses, with the famed El Paso Country Club heading the top of
the list. However, a golf excursion to El Paso isn't complete without
side trips to Las Cruces, NM and Juarez, Mexico, both of which offer outstanding
golf for unbelievable values.

Notes
There's always adventure to be had across the line in Juarez,
Mexico. Take the downtown trolley, then start off in the bustling central
market place. You can even golf at the immaculate Campestre Juarez
Country Club (see the "Border Crossings" essay). In El Paso
the best barbecue in town is at The State Line Bar-B-Q (915-581-3371),
where you'll get an entire loaf of bread with your generous portions,
and Aceitunas (915-581-) is a dive with mariachis on spring and
summer evenings. Also, Cafe Central (915-545-2233) has a cozy bar
and a solid menu.
