Located within 22,000 acres of Chihuahuan Desert at the foothills of the Chisos Mountains and next to Big Bend National Park, the new Black Jack's Crossing Course at Lajitas is a golf oasis in a barren land of nothingness. Designed by Lanny Wadkins, this par 72, 7,400-yard championship course is breathtaking, set out against the backdrop of one of the last untouched, unique landscapes in North America.

The course, which opened in September of 2011, is actually on a different site than the one that preceded it. The old course, which was destroyed by a flood in 2008, wasn't built on the mountainsides. This new course has elevated tees, winding holes, plenty of bunkers and beautiful paspalum greens and fairways.

Although some of the shots appear intimidating, Wadkins created generous fairways so there's plenty of room to drive the ball, but not impossible to find the desert. The par 3s are particularly strong with each of them different.

Getting there: If you're flying commercial, your best bet is to land in Midland, Texas, rent a car, and then drive four hours south to Lajitas, which is just outside of Terlingua.

My friends and I flew in and besides the heat, the course and staff are top notch. The course is as nice as they come. Well maintained and managed, Pro shop is interesting and all our expectations were exceeded. The hotel was very comfortable and the restaurant was 4 stars in food and wine selection. The only problem I had was with the airport. Strong winds came up and they left my plane (C421) in a very bad position but that wasn't the resorts fault. We will be returning in the fall to play again, and again.

Absolutely stunning course, incredibly fun to play, the most exciting part three in the world, and smacking balls over the Rio Grande. Make sure you get here at least once, it's well worth the long trip to make it there.

We love this course from the moment we are greeted by the staff until we leave. The most beautiful course I have ever played. A wonderful staff. Fun course. Beautiful scenery.

Absolutely breathtaking! As we went to each hole the scenery became more and more beautiful! You just cannot imagine this awesome place. There is no way to tell just by driving up what you will experience. Even after 9 holes... It just goes of to unbelievable heights...it gets even better!! There are no photos that can do justice! I am not kidding! The feeling you get is that of amazement for this miraculous place. I am in complete awe of the incredible work and designing of this place. You can tell that someone truly loved this part of the world to take on this labor in the desert. It has now become my favorite place!!!

As fine a golf course as you are likely to play in Texas. There are no more scenic views from tee box or greens than any course you are likely to play. A MUST do for any golfer's bucket list.

Breathtaking views, dramatic elevation changes, great conditions – lead to intimidating shots. Got to hit a ball into Mexico. Hope to make it back some day to improve on my scores.
