Playing the highest course in Texas is a special experience. Wide-open, firm fairways that enhance roll, shots that traveling farther because of the altitude, and some of the best greens you'll ever play on…this course is a must-play if you're traveling in this remote region. While we didn't have time to walk the course, we teed off before 9 a.m. and finished our round in under an hour.

In terms of hazards, water comes into play on two of the nine holes, and the common Bermuda rough can be thick in the summer. There are not a ton of trees, but what's there is mature and there seem to be just enough to get in the way if you stray from the middle of the fairway.

One word of caution: Don't let the bitter attitude of the course manager negatively affect your experience or impressions of this golf course. Perhaps it was because we were not locals, or caught him too early on a bad day, but we were surprised by his lack of small-town hospitality-usually a given in this part of the world.

Getting there : Turn right (north) off of Hwy. 90 at the traffic light in Marfa. A few blocks down past the post office find FM 1112, then turn right. Drive 2 miles east and wind your way back to the course.

Walked onto the golf course in July of 2021 around 6 p.m. and either the course manager or an attendant just let me play for free. I said "No, I need to pay something." He just waved me off and said 'go have fun, play as much as you want.' Caught me off guard but represented the hospitality of the town.

I'm rating this 9 hole course based on price alone. First of all according to this web site Marfa Golf Course accepts credit cards -- they DO NOT accept credit cards which I thought was very unusual. The green fees are listed as $6.38 weekdays (which is when I went) I don't know where that price came from because I sure as hell didn't see it. I was charged $39 for a 9 HOLE course. That $39 also included a riding cart. That fee for a 9 hole course riding amounts to price gouging! $39 is about what an 18 hole costs including the cart. Do yourself a favor and go to Marfa's Burrito café and pig out on some super good burritos -- your tummy and wallet will thank you. I personally feel that $39 went right into someone's pocket.

Course Manager was very accommodating. The course was in surprisingly great shape. Have played high priced courses that did not have near as good greens. Must play if in area.

best small golf course in Texas. Period. Ernest is one of a kind, and helped me win a Texas State Championship in 97. Small, elevated greens put an emphasis on your short game. The elevation there is gonna make your drives off the tee box make you feel like superman. Enjoy!

Wife and I went to play the course. When we showed up, the "pro shop" attendant was very short on conversation, as if we were interrupting him doing something more important. Also, they did not take cards, so it would have required us driving back into town and getting cash and going back. At that point, we just decided to drive to Del Rio and play their course instead, since it was on our route.

Most greens are very good. Grass around the greens is in very good condition. Fairways have about 90% grass, edges a little sparse, consider where you are playing. Peacefully quiet!

    Low handicapers will score great.
Very small greens, most are tilted front to back.
Surfaces will hold a good line, some breaks.
They will hold a shot with back-spin.

The large trees are mostly out of play unless you spray shots. A new company has bought the property and will expand to 18 holes in the near future. A small hotel will also be on the property.

Fun, quick course to play. Rate with cart 18 holes $27 and change as of June 29th 2016. Manager is a very nice gentleman.

Pull carts available. Flat course. Green to next tee box close by.
