Star Ranch a Welcome Addition to Austin Golf Scene
June 22, 2001

The Golf Club at Star Ranch is a new course, just opened in May, 2001. Fairways and tees are in excellent condition. Greens need some work and are thin, but putt true. Hardly a flat line in the place, and plenty of sand. Lots of up, down and side hill lies. Course plays 7,017 yards from the tips (Tour); 6,341 from the men's (Champ); 5,678 from the "Preferred", and 4,990 from the "Forward" tees. Plenty of tall grass and trees, but there's room to play. Not an over abubdance of water. Green fees with cart for a single weekdays with tax was just under $60.

Hidden Oaks Golf Course a Good Value
June 22, 2001

Good public course for the money. Weekdays $23 with a cart for 18. Longer front 9 much easier than the shorter, shot-makers back 9.

Come Prepared for Buckhorn Golf Course
May 31, 2001

The course (in Comfort, Texas) has a nice layout, and offers a very nice round of golf if you enjoy playing over and around raw sewage. If you go to play this course take your oldest shoes and balls that you don't want to keep and clean your clubs very well as soon as you leave the course. The water looks pretty on the course until you realise that it is what you are smelling and then see the signs stating that this is reclaimed water. And I mean very recently reclaimed water! Don't forget your plastic throw away gloves!!!!

Praise for the Old Brickyard Golf Club
May 11, 2001

The Old Brickyard Golf Club in Trophy Club is a really nice track. Good tees, very good fairways, slow to very slow greens, heavy sand bunkers, nice folks, poor to almost fair GPS system. Not worth the extra $10.00. Wind blows bouncing off mounds and swirling is common. Increases fun. About a 7 on a 10 point scale.

Good Times at Hackberry Creek
May 2, 2001

Recently played Hackberry Creek Country Club in No. Richland Hills, and the greens were quick and true. The fairways are coming in nicely. The overall design rewards an accurate shot, while penalizing an errant one. Very fun to play.

Poor Conditions at La Cantera
May 1, 2001

Played the La Cantera Palmer Course for the first time recently. Nice layout, but the greens condition was very bad for $140 green fees. Management should have warned us about the green condition/discounted fees for this kind of condition. I suggest before getting tee time, get the green condition from the club pro. Real disappointed with the round.

Glen Garden Feature Brings Back the Memories

I was browsing through the web to locate some Bay Area Golf Course web sites for a Course Guide our BaySPORT Magazine is doing and came across your article about Glen Garden Country Club. I grew up not five minutes away from the course, went to football banquets and junior high dances there in my youth, never realizing its place in the history of golf in Texas and ultimately beyond. Your article brought back fond memories.

The first time I ever played the course, I was a young man, still oblivious to its history. However, it had significance in mine, because it was the first time I ever played golf at a private country club. Perhaps the seeds were planted there that have led to the deep love of the game that I have developed, and the interest in its history, especially in Texas.

I just wanted to compliment you on the article and for making others aware of Glen Garden's place in golf's history.

Best regards,

Readers Rave About Sky Creek

Meticulously carved out of thick trees and rolling hills, Sky Creek Ranch Club winds through striking scenery unlike any other in the Metroplex. The course, designed by Robert Trent Jones, Jr., features narrow, tree-lined fairways with natural streams and lakes on 16 holes. Dramatic, elevated green, many with multiple tiers, provide a final challenge for each exciting hole.

Check out the new Stoney Ridge course in Childress, Tx. It is an affordable challendging 18 hole course that is well maintained and senic. I find it one of the best I have played west of I35.
