Rawls course
Great course, but pace of play was so slow, we didn’t get to finish our round due to darkness.
Hello, u314160709038. Thank you for taking the time to leave us a review. We are sorry to see that your overall experience was anything short of 5 stars, but we hope you'll give us another try in the near future.

5 handicap review
First off, its an amazing layout! Not indicative of a west Texas course. That said, its very score-able. Its also a course, depending on wind, you can blow up on.
As a solid ball striker, its fairway, green, 2-3 putt (sometimes a 1 putt if you know where to leave your approach based on pin position).
The main defense of the course is its visual trickery and bunkers. Most fairway bunkers are in play from 220-280 yrds off the tee. Challenge them successfully, and birdies are a plenty! Unsuccessful challenges, and you pay the price, big time!
I’ve played 2 rounds there. Both from the White tees (2nd furthest: 6800+, I think). I shot 79/80. With 2 lost balls (the fescue is death) on each rd and 4 three putts on the 79 and 6 three putts on the 80.
Greens were in bad shape, but I had heard a chemical misused was to blame, not really the normal green conditions. That said, ALWAYS be below the hole. Greens are very undulated, but true. Stay below the hole and a 2 putt is likely.
All par 5’s are reachable in 2, if 300 off the tee. If not, the back nine par 5’s require a lay up.
Overall, this course tests mental ability as much as physical. Be smart, take your medicine when your in trouble, get out with a bogey. Dont be a hero. There are more birdies available to get that stroke back!
PS: my playing partner was 68 yrs old, 15 handicap and shot a 90 from the Reds. He hits it about 230 off the tee. And those tees were perfect for him! Maybe even a BIT long. FYI.
Cheers

Greens are in scary bad shape
Was driving to Colorado and decided to stop by the Rawls course. It’s been on my TX bucket list for some time. Saw the last review from a month ago saying the greens were horrendous & thought there’s no way the Rawls Course would have unplayable greens. I was wrong. Hopefully they can bounce back because I felt like I was playing a muni with beautiful fairways.

Greens are horrendous
This course is really struggling this spring. Not sure how they messed up their greens so bad but the superintendent doesn't know what he's doing. They did their aerification about 2 months ago and the greens have never come back after. Lots of dead spots and only maybe 2 greens are rolling decent. The driving range is really poor quality as well. Horrible quality beat up range balls hitting off of sand. 60 bucks is way over priced right now for the worst greens in town. Shadow hills, LCC, and even Meadowbrook have done a better job with green upkeep.
February golf!
Only in Lubbock, Texas can it be 20 degrees one day, then 70 the next! Thanks to Rawls for keeping their course in tip top shape in winter!

Greens Not Up to Par
I have to say I was disappointed by the shape of most of the greens. When I played over Father's Day they rolled true and were in prestine condition. Course is still the best in area but feel as if care for small details dropped a little.

Ridiculous pin placement
The fairways were in great shape. The rest of the course was average at best. The pin placements were borderline illegal. They allow their maintenance guy so to put a blindfold and just stab the pin wherever they want. Half of the pins were placed on a slope which made the shots that I stuck 2 feet from the hole impossible to make. This course is difficult enough where you don’t have to punish casual players with ridiculous pin placement.

Best public course in Texas
Played all the top courses, i think this is best in Texas.
Might be best public course in West Texas/Eastern New Mexico
Course was fun to play. It is the longest but the sand traps throughout forces you to think about your next shot.
All you can hit range, chipping, and putting is awesome.
Talking about putting, the greens are fast but true. Once you learn the speed you are good to go.
Look forward to making a monthly visit.

Bad tee times
We booked through GolfNow for $50, course charged us $85. We had to haggle to get our $35 back after the round.
Your tee time system still needs improving.
