Oh my - the greens!
Worst greens in San Antonio. Need hammer to get tee in ground. But....interesting layout and at $14.00 a great course for new players to refine their game as it costs so very little.
Northcliffe - NO!
Although we played for a bargain rate and it was a beautiful day, that was offset by some of the worst greens in South Texas! The fairways are also bumpy, rough and in bad shape. Sorry but that is how it is! I would not recommend this course!
PS: Staff was very friendly!
Great Value
While this course does need some work, the staff there are doing what they can to make it a good experience. I also enjoy playing there and will continue to come back.
Terrible condition
The grass at this course looked like it hadn't been cut in 2 weeks, the greens were just about the bumpiest greens I've ever played on which made them impossible to put. You can take at least 18 strokes off your score just from putting. It took about a 5 and a half hour round to finish, the pace of play was unbearable and nothing was done about it. Overall a pretty bad experience for a day of golfing I wouldn't go back to play and I would never recommend this course to a friend.
Fair price
The public course is well kept on the front nine. There are a few holes on the back nine that need some TLC. The cart paths are in bad shape throughout the entire course. The staff was exceptionally friendly and called the round when rain started to get heavy. We received a rain check for another round. All in all, a good course for the price.
Goat track
This course was fair three years ago. It is now a goat track. The greens are the worst I've played on. The Marshall relayed that they are trying to sell the course. I told him if ya gonna sell your car you need to wash it.
Northcliffe Esperience
The staff is super friendly and make you feel welcome. I would judge the course as average and my two reasons are the condition of the greens and the bunkers. Both need some work.
I was playing in a foursome and on the third hole we caught up with another foursome. They were slowed by a foursome in front of them and 4 hours and 45 minutes after starting we finished. There were three groups stacked up by the time we finished because of one slow group.
Terrible
Greens almost unplayable. Course needs a lot of work.
Greens are awful
I have played this course for years. Actually grew up in this neighborhood. I haven't played here in a few years and will probably not go back. Most of the greens are almost not puttable. Lots of bare spots and sand coming through. With all the rain we have had there is no excuse to not have at least grass on the greens. Then where there is grass it has growth of clumps that make the ball bounce left or right. There is no need to read the green because the ball will not roll where it should anyway.
Greens are awful
Each time I play this course it seems to get worse. Greens are basically .... unputtable.
Ok course, greens have weeds, ball bounces a lot putting.
I use to work at this course about 10 years ago (2007) and it was a great course. The course went under new owners a while back and now the course isn't quite as good. The grass gets a little long and the greens aren't kept up nearly as well as they should be. There are weeds all over the greens (especially on the front 9) making the ball bounce left and right all the way to the hole.
Once a good value, but no more
I used to play Northcliffe a lot when I was re-learning the game and needed a good practice course. It was a good value then, but not now. The cost is about the same, but the condition of the course has deteriorated greatly. The fairways are barely acceptable but the greens are in very poor condition (even now in the spring when the grass should be green and growing). You can't putt straight with all the bumps, bare spots and weeds. It seems to me that they are preparing to shut down the course and are avoiding spending anything at all.
I've played here several times. Worst I've ever seen it. A matter of fact, worst course I've ever played. The greens were unplayable. Crabgrass and weeds and sand all over the greens.
Not going back until they maintain course better
Truly bad conditions and seemingly no course maintenance. Greenskeeper must have been fired as greens were essentially non-existent and hard to distinguish from the weed filled fairways. Don't waste even a super low green fee on this place till it's improved.
Poor course maintenance
The only reason I play this course is because it's cheap when I use a Golf Now Hot Deal.
They only cut the grass. Greens are in poor condition with mostly weeds with a little grass or no grass. Bunkers are not maintained and have no sand. No water in ball washers. Course narshall slowed us down because he was searching for golf balls.
Very poor maintenance
Aside from an extremely friendly and cordial staff, this golf course is probably in the worst condition I've ever seen a golf course.
On the front nine, there was standing water in several locations, obviously the result of very poor drainage.
The back nine was much better as far as drainage goes, but there were bumps and ruts everywhere.
All of the greens we're in extremely poor condition. Weeds and clover permeated both front and back.
I hate to leave such a negative review, but I feel compelled to do so. It will be our last time there.
In closing, female golfers should be aware that the on course bathroom facilities were out of order. This created a dilemma for my wife.
Unplayable greens
We thought we would try the course again after a couple of bad experiences due to course conditions. In the fairways lakes of "casual water dotted the course . Huge ditches of mud made any shot probable at best. Grass in the fairways was non existent or unrecognizable . The greens were the worst! The had warned us the had. Even attacked by some kind of fungus but nothing could prepare me for this . Huge bare spits of hard pan broken up by tufts of weeds that altered any put.
The staff as usual were friendly and helpful. The facilities are clean and adequate.
But even at $20 the course was an unplayable disaster.
What a shame because while a bit long the actual lay out could be fun.
Couldn't recommend
This Course is a Joke!
Playing golf here is what I imagine it was like to play golf in Scotland 300 years ago.... Except with more trees.
I have never seen such a poorly kept course in my life.
•The fairways are made up of weeds and dirt.
•The rough consists of rocks and dirt.
•The only kind of grass on the greens is crabgrass.
•The tee boxes, are as bad as the rest of the course.
• The bunkers are like concrete. I damaged one of my wedges pitching out.
Be sure to see the pictures I've attached to this review.
I will never be coming back here. The whole place just needs to be bulldozed.
