About 30 miles west of Round Rock lies Thorndale, named after the region’s mesquite thorn, sagebrush, and prickly pear. A vintage agricultural community, the town serves as the business hub for area farmers like Don and Beth Lackey, who’ve been kind enough to bring the glorious game of golf to the pastures of Milam County.

T-Bones downtown comes highly recommended, or you can drive over to Granger Lake and find The Cotton Club for live music and adult beverages. Or track down the bump in the road called San Gabriel (FM 486 6 miles north), where along the river lie the remnants of three San Xavier missions that date back to the 1750s, site of ill-fated Spanish religious efforts.
