Elevation : 551
Population : 7,669
Traveling east on I-30, take a left after Greenville and you’ll
be heading up Texas 50 to the college town of Commerce. “Cow
Hill” was established in the 1870s on the fertile prairies
between the Middle and South Sulphur rivers, and was named the “Bois
d’Arc Capital of Texas” because of its location in the
middle of a thick grove of those trees. Here you can reserve B&B
accommodations, mosey around the square for shops and antiques,
and play some golf on their course that overlooks nearby Cooper
Lake.

Notes
The town square, affectionately known as The Square,
is the hub of activity, featuring a great little coffee shop for
breakfast, antique shops for piddling around, and restaurants to
keep you fed. Look for the Cow Hill Express (555-555-5555)
and order yourself a slug of Cow Hill cappuccino. Commerce celebrates
the Bois d’Arc Bash every September, which
honors the second-largest bois d’arc tree in Texas. Ask for
directions to the tree, known locally as “Max.” There’s
a recently refurbished local motel for lodging. |
