Elevation : 490

Athens, the county seat of Henderson County, is known as the Black-Eyed
Pea Capital of the World and is located 35 miles west of Tyler.
The town dates back to the 1850s, but didn’t really become
established until this part of Texas became an important part of
the Cotton Belt. The Texas Parks and Wildlife’s Texas Freshwater
Fisheries Center in Athens is always an interesting spot for outdoorsmen,
who can gaze at some of the huge bass that have been preserved by
the Sharelunker program.

Notes
Go to the town square for pork rips at Chops Wood
Grill (903-677-4055). If you’re into people-watching,
the Old Fiddlers Reunion in May and the Black-Eyed
Pea Jamboree in July are the place to be.
