Here in the upper reaches of northeast Texas between the Red River
and Sulphur River, macho man James Bowie established his Texas roots,
eventually getting the county named in his honor after he added
knife-fighting, ranching, Alamo hero-ing, and exploring to his resume.
In the past, New Boston has depended heavily on two military installations
for its prosperity. One of them, the former Red River Army Depot,
now hosts a nice little park that features the Oak Grove Golf Club
and Grill, as well as tennis and swimming facilities.

After the round, grab a burger at the course (Oak
Grove Grill), then drive the 8 miles north to the Red River.
Fulfill a lifelong dream and ask the locals to take you “noodling”
for catfish (just do it). Explore for a while, then take the back
roads (7 miles on 41 N, then 20 miles on 32 E) to Ashdown, AR and
play one of their little 9-hole courses. If you stay in New Boston
there are a few local motels, and the Catfish King
(903-628-5502) will feed you.
