Briarwood Golf Club
An outstanding course known for hosting past Southwest Conference
championships, Briarwood is a challenging course that rolls through
the tall East Texas pines.
The course opened in 1961 and was redesigned by Lee Singletary in
1985. The design is a bit unusual, with a front nine that features
three par 3s, par 4s, and par 5s. No. 1 tests you early: a 515-yard
par 5 that plays straightaway, but is difficult because of the fairway
bunker and elevated green.
Two holes stand out on the back. Hole 15 is sort of reminiscent
of Augusta–a par 3 over water to a small green framed by bunkers
on either side and a flower garden in the back. The next hole is
one of the most difficult: a 426-yard par 4 with a tee shot over
water into an uphill, dogleg-right fairway.
Other notes: On Course Strategies of Austin has been managing the
course since a July 2002 foreclosure. The course is now owned by
a local real estate investor.
