Originally a 9-hole course that opened in 1972, Cape Royal now offers 18 holes of golf over its rugged terrain. Numerous hills provide challenging elevation changes and a few unique holes.

From the tips the course plays to a par 70 6,088 yards, but offers holes of surprising length, especially on the front. This side features three long-iron par 3s and two 400-yard-plus par 4s, including the number one handicap No. 6.

The back side features only one par 5, the 11th hole, which plays 495 yards. The signature hole is the last, a 345-yard doglegger that plays uphill and offers a blind tee shot and a pond just beyond the landing area at the top of the hill.

Getting there : From I-45 north, exit Willis/1097 and turn right. Drive about 10 miles to Hwy. 150, then turn right and drive another 17 miles to Hwy. 156. Next turn left and head over to FM 224, where you'll make a right and drive 4 miles to the course. The clubhouse is on the right.

This is a tough little course. Husband & I were first off the tee, and enjoyed the early morning on the course. There isn't anything flat on this course but the teeboxes. But that is a VERY VERY GOOD thing. There were several holes i double bogie'd and was glad to get it. We thoroughly enjoyed the round and are planning to go back. Should not be missed. Greens a little bumpy but not a big problem. Very nice layout!! Reminds you of Kingwood CC from Tin Cup!

This is amongst my favorite golf courses. Under the new management, the course and the customers get high ranking TLC that both deserve. For those who have been playing the flatter courses along the Coastal Plain of Texas, Cape Royale has steep elevation. The fairways are tight and the side to side tilt of some of them are tricky. A few greens have a good degree of slant to them, as well, and require a lot of touch when pitching, chipping and putting. Play this course often and you can polish your game in surprising ways. It is a thinker's course. It has ponds on two holes that have swallowed too many of my golf balls, though. Should you become nettled about your game on this course, ample compensation is served by the magnificent views of Lake Livingston--the second largest lake in Texas. Added to that ire the wind in the pines and the Bald Eagles sounding off in flight. A great golf experience. I drive up the hour and 15 minutes from Houston just to play this course. It is well worth the drlve.
