The Golf Club At Westwood
The golf : Located near downtown Houston, Westwood was
built by John Bredemus in 1929 and is one of Houston's most historic courses.
The original 9-hole Bredemus track survived until the 1950s, when bayou
was rerouted through the course as part of a flood control project. Club
members hired Joe Finger, whose father designed the original clubhouse,
to oversee the construction of the new course.
Finger's layout is burdened by the wind, and features small greens and
water in play on 15 holes. Flowers line the lush course, creating a garden-like
setting that has hosted the likes of the PGA Tour's Houston Open in 1972.
The feature hole is No. 13, a 437-yard challenge that features an extremely
narrow fairway.
Other notes: In 1990 the club spent $1 million to improve the course,
including a complete greens renovation that created what many consider
the most undulating greens in Houston.
