Canyon Lake Golf Club

The golf : With its lake views, rolling hills, elevation changes, huge oak trees, and tons of water, Canyon Lake is well worth the day trip despite its remote location.
The key to playing this course well is to be aware of the adjustments that need to be made to deal with the elevation changes. While some of the fairways are tight, there are a surprising number of holes with generous landing areas. The greens are not overly difficult but do have some undulations.

No. 1 will get your attention: a 450-yard par 4 with a bending fairway. You’ll be happy to open with a bogey.

On the back, two notables holes are Nos. 12 and 18. The par 5 No. 12 is just under 500 yards, but forces an approach over water to a green surrounded by bunkers. The ender is a longer par 5, playing 538 yards–you’ll need a solid tee shot to reach the corner, which will set up a difficult second shot over a creek to a small landing area. Fortunately, the final approach is less risky: only a short wedge to the green.

The club has a quaint little lounge for post-round refreshments. And it’s probably not a bad idea to ask them about the use of their pool and condos if the family is with you.
