Lockhart
Elevation : 518
Population : .11,602
Lockhart is south of Austin on US 183 toward Luling and east-west
US 90. The town is famous for the 1840 Battle of Plum Creek, where
a volunteer force of settlers and Texas Rangers defeated a plundering
Comanche war party. This marked the last time the Comanches attacked
a coastal town or ranch.
The Chisolm Trail routed through Lockhart in the 1870s, and today
the town is the hub for the area’s farming and agricultural
needs. Since US 183 is the less-traveled route south of Austin,
we highly recommend a trip through the “BBQ Capital of Texas”
for golf and good eats.

Notes
When you’re in the BBQ Capital of Texas, don’t
even consider eating anything other than the messy stuff. Test your
BBQ intake tolerance against elderly East Texas lovelies at Smitty’s
Market (512-398-9344), where you can stack your plate and
share a long wooden table to stuff your face with the locals. Other
options are Black’s Barbecue, the oldest
in Texas, Kreuz Market, where they don’t
offer sauce because “good barbecue doesn’t need sauce,”
or the cafeteria-style Chisolm Trail Bar-B.Q. |
