Originally located in a remote part of the Hill Country that has now been absorbed by the Austin city limits, the BCC dates back to 1956 when it was only a 9-hole layout. Today the club boasts two totally distinct tracks, known as the Balcones Course and the Spicewood Course.

Austinite Douglas Kinser approached the city in the late 1940s about improving the poor condition of the land occupied by the former Butler Brick Company. His wish was granted, and from the former clay mine he created a lush little 9-hole course that now graces a serene, landscaped setting just south of Town Lake.

Great Hills rests atop one of the highest points in the Hill Country, featuring a Don January and Billy Martindale design that rolls through scenic hills and canyons. Updates in 1990 lengthened the course, but it still plays a pedestrian 6,103 from the white tees.

Lakeway Country Club - Live Oak Course

Lakeway opened in 1963 with two Leon Howard designs outside of Austin near Lake Travis. The Live Oak Course is the closest to the lake, with holes 5 and 6 just off the marina.

The Yaupon Course came along 12 years after Live Oak, and was particularly challenging for Howard’s return to the area because of the rocky terrain. Due to the lack of soil, construction required 100,000 cubic yards of soil to be dredged from the lake bottom and spread over the entire course.

Lions upstaged the prestigious sand-greened Austin Country Club when it opened with Bermuda greens in 1923, and has been Austin’s most beloved municipal ever since. Although no one knows for sure who officially designed this short, 6,000-yard classic, it appears that many members of Austin’s golf scene were involved, including Harvey and Tom Penick, and perhaps even the legendary John Bredemus.

Lost Creek opened in 1970, featuring a 6,623-yard, par 72 layout that has hosted Sectional Playability Tests for aspiring PGA members over the years. The traditional design features narrow, tree-lined fairways, creeks that roll through the course and come into play on a many holes, and well-conditioned greens.

Unlike the flashier Fazio Course, Crenshaw’s work at Barton Creek typifies his traditionalist style, a tribute to his dedication as one of the game’s great historians. There’s more of a natural feel to playing on of his courses, and more pure golf enjoyment for the layman because they actually have a chance to hit the wide fairways and monstrous greens.

Located at Steiner Ranch off of Ranch Road 620 in Northwest Austin, the project has been driven by prominent Dallas business executive and UT alum Mike Myers, who signed a 50-year licensing agreement with the university to use the school’s name.
