Mexia

Elevation : 534
Population : 6,572

Pronounced Muh-HEY-uh, this former 1920s oil boom town is about 90 miles south of Dallas between I-35 and I-45, just east of Waco. This quiet city was established in 1871and named for the family of Mexican General Jose Antonio Mexia, who donated the townsite. While it might be nice to dig into the community and investigate the absorbing intellectual roots of Mexia’s most famous resident, Anna Nicole Smith, grizzled travelers should have their priorities straight and find fun at the Mexia’s 9-hole golf course instead.

Notes
When it’s time to eat and drink, head to the Rockin’ L Steakhouse (254-562-9404) out by Lake Mexia. For lodging call the Hamilton House B&B (254-562-2005). At the Old Fort Parker State Historic Site, you can see where Cynthia Ann Parker, the mother of the last great Comanche chief, Quanah Parker, was taken captive in 1836 in a massive Indian attack. Also, the highest point between Houston and Dallas is at nearby Tehuacana Hills.
