At one time the prairie was in fact grand for this now-bustling suburb 12 miles west of Dallas. In the old days Fort Worth, Arlington, and Dallas didn’t squeeze the town so hard, and Cottonwood, Fish, and Kirby Creeks all ran through the community more naturally. Today the town is also surrounded by Irving and Cedar Hill, and offers Mountain Creek Lake to its east and Joe Pool Lake to the south for some scenic respite amongst the growing industries. Six golf clubs currently call Grand Prairie home, but the golf world is buzzing about the new Wildflower Resort that’s under construction on the shores of Joe Pool, slated for two Jack Nicklaus-designed tracks to accompany a Texas-sized world-class resort

The Amerisuites (972-988-6800) is on Hwy 360, along with the Hampton Inn (982-988-8889). Everything to eat is on I-20–every chain you can imagine. Two good Italian joints are Marsala Restaurante (972-988-1101) and super-upscale Fontana’s (972-263-1945) where you will need reservations on the weekends.
