Westridge is a unique Jeff Brauer design that is a welcome addition to McKinney golf because of its user-friendly layout. The design tips out at a standard looking 7,041 yards, however its combination of six par 3s (none over water), six par 4s, and six par 5s is far from normal. Brauer incorporated deep bunkers, natural areas, and lakes to accompany the huge, undulating greens that await hacks who become lazy after getting home in regulation.

Other than the unique hole combination, the drive-able par 4s (Nos. 1 and 13) are notable during the summer months because they play downwind and are good birdie opportunities.

Getting there : Located just south of Virginia Pkwy and FM 2478 (Custer Rd.). From Hwy. 75, exit Virginia Pkwy. and head west to Custer Rd. Turn left, then right at Cotton Ridge.

The course design and layout is good. Well placed sand traps and bunkers to make a challenging round of golf. The sand traps are very deep and would require a fair amount of maintenance. The problem is that these traps are clay and have little if any sand. Most have no drainage and just pool the water. There are footprints cast into the clay and golfers don't even attempt to rake. These are without a doubt the worst sand traps I've ever seen. Doing maintenance on a golf course is more than just cutting the grass. This was the first and last time I'll play golf at West Ridge.

Unique 6-6-6 set up may lead you to believe that this is too tricked up. Located in Stonebridge Ranch, this public course has teeth. Greens are fast with break and 11,17 and 18 are technical holes that will make you earn your final score.
I moved to the area the first year it opened and the course is always in excellent shape. You will not be disappointed, but a word of advice, if you are playing the course in the summer, make an early tee time because the course is always busy.
