Southern Hills Golf Club

Also known as the Shallow Creek Golf & RV Resort (always good to know the RV part), this is an 18-hole, semi-private championship course. You’ll have to decide if the words “RV” and “championship” go well together. The design incorporates fairways with generous landing areas, lots of natural hazards, and plenty of water.

Good golfers can be tested from the 7,000-yard-plus tips, but most hacks should place themselves at the gold tees and play from a much more reasonable 6,256 yards.

The most talked-about hole is the monstrous 16th, which plays a whopping 681 yards from the back tees, and a still-significant 600 yards from the gold tees. Take your time and you’ll get there eventually.

Other notes: You can still make a weekend of it without the RV, as the course offers clean-looking “resort villas” for rent on a nightly or weekly basis. To complement the golf, there is a lighted driving range, miniature golf, an ATV park, fishing lake, volleyball court, and an equestrian center. What else could you possibly need?

Getting there :From I-20 east, take Hwy 135 north and exit Wilkns Rd.. Turn right and drive a short distance to the course.
