Alsatian Golf Club
The golf : Known as one of the best golf values in the
San Antonio area, the Alsatian Golf Club offers an outstanding golf experience
for a town of 2,700. This well-designed links-style track takes full advantage
of the terrain, making use of every possible variation in elevation.
The club's reputation for having two completely different nines is well
deserved. In fact, some say that every hole appears to have been built
by a different architect. While the front nine is flat with fairways lined
by immature trees, the back nine features mounded fairways lined with
mature oaks and a creek bed that comes into play throughout the design.
After a standard opening hole, the challenge picks up with the long, par
4 No. 2. The tee shot on this hole forces you to lay up behind the fairway
lake, leaving you with a 180-yard approach over the water and into the
wind.
No. 13 on the back takes you for a ride: a 570-yard par 5 with an elevated
tee shot down into the creek bottom, followed by an approach through a
narrow fairway into an elevated green.
More course notes: The greens average about 5,000 square feet in size,
are firm, and putt true. The clubhouse is small and simple, serving basic
foods and canned beer. A bucket of balls and cart is included with the
full green fee. While walking is allowed, club personnel strongly suggest
that you ride, and the green fee will not be reduced for walkers. The
facility offers completely closed golf carts for use during the winter
months.
