On the grounds of the Naval Air Station, this military facility started out as a rudimentary 6-hole course that opened in 1955 and eventually became a first-class 18-hole layout. Prior to the final expansion in 1985, the course had 12 holes, with hackers playing six of the holes twice for a full round of golf.
The military personnel, some of whom maintain the course in exchange for green fees, keep this simple track in excellent condition. The course has forgiving, wide-open fairways-if your approaches are accurate into the small greens, only a true butcher could three-putt. Two ponds and a creek impact play on six holes. At only 5,700 yards, the course is very susceptible to low scores without the wind.

Hole 18 is a good finisher, playing 420 yards into the wind with out-of-bounds looming left.

Getting there : From I-37 south exit South Padre Island Dr. and turn onto NAS Drive. Follow the signs to the naval base and the course.

Like playing in a cow pasture. I think they mow it once a month. Tee boxes are very uneven and holes all over. Greens have water ruts. And mole holes. Horrible course!!! The Navy should be ashamed. To put this type of product out there for its active duty personnel.

Paid almost full price to play 9 holes. Fire ants rule this course. Lawn mowers must be broken. Could lose a ball on the fairway. Sooo uneven could lose some teeth. Was really hopeful this would be so much better.

A very enjoyable course, and can be quite challenging when the prevailing S. East winds are up. I've played golf all over the country, and I would be happy playing Gulf Winds every day.

This is an awesome course for the average golfer like me. The only problem I have with it is that the layout is a little confusing. I know that there is a course layout on the back of the score card, but it would also be nice to have little signs next to the cart path directing you to the next hole. The one specifically that I can remember, I think, is going from #2 green to # 3 tee box. There was a couple of holes on the back 9 that also presented an issue, but I don't recall the numbers. This would be a nice update for those of us that don't play there often enough to remember where each tee is located. Again, it is an awesome course overall!!
