La Vernia

Elevation : 474
Population : 976

Originally named Live Oak Grove for the abundance of majestic live oak trees in this area just east of San Antonio, La Vernia was established in 1850 by settlers from Mississippi. The name La Vernia comes from the Spanish word la verde, or "the green," but this fertile region is also referred to as the Glass League after a fellow named Glass who divided and sold his property into separate farms. The countryside around La Vernia still sustains about a dozen productive farms, all over 100 acres each, and is the ideal setting for the beautiful Las Palomas Country Club.

Notes
You can have lunch at the South Texas Steakhouse, but that's about it for La Vernia-there's no shopping, lodging, or attractions to speak of. Head to San Antonio if you have plans, otherwise fill up the cooler and buy gas at one of La Vernia's convenience stores and work your way south for further adventures.
