Another one of San Antonio's many military courses, Gateway dates back to 1946 when it opened with a traditional 9-hole layout. The second nine was added in the 1950s, providing military personnel with a full day of tight, hilly fairways and blind golf shots. Water comes into play on only two holes, and the greens are mostly flat with the rare undulation.
On the front, No. 4 is the best hole, playing 454 yards over a small ravine and into an elevated, bunker-protected green. The back side opens well with the signature 577-yard No. 10, a unique hole because of the scenery and its secluded green surrounded by oak and mesquite trees.
Getting there : From Highway 90 west, take the Military Drive exit and turn left. When you come to the second gate, turn in and follow the signs to the clubhouse.
