Don't be misled by the isolated rural location of this small-town municipal golf course. The par 70, 6,308-yard layout, designed by Warren Cantrell in 1955, is a hidden gem in the west Texas oilfields. With mature trees lining the somewhat narrow fairways, fast greens in superb condition (with the exception of problems in 2001 that have since been resolved), and water in play on over half of the holes, it's a challenging test of golf.

With only two par 5s, the course is enjoyable for the average hack because of its short length. Out-of-bounds comes into play on eight holes due to the boundaries of the course's driving range and the town's airport. The front nine is highlighted by a dicey par 3. Ladies play to par 72 and do not get much of an advantage on most holes due to the proximity of the differing tees.

Like other West Texas municipals, the fairways are susceptible to the lack of rain as well as the extensive use of carts; therefore, the fairways are sometimes a little beaten-down and dry. The advantage is that your ball will roll farther on what is already a short course.

Overall, a good value course. Locals praise the service of the club since Jerod Lee took over operations a few years back. The pro shop is small but has a decent selection of clubs and accessories.

Getting there : Heading north on 385, turn left at Big Springs Hwy. Take the Broadway exit and turn right on Mustang Drive. The course is just down the road.

I played this course when I taught at the high school for 5 years. I have never been a great golfer, but I loved this course. Another teacher and I would head out to the course right after school was out for the day, and we would get at least 9 holes in before we had to quit due to darkness. The guys at the pro shop back then were top notch. I have one story to relate about the hole that runs parallel to the airstrip., I was teeing up while a plane was revving to take off... it was a single engine plane with a "bubble" cockpit top;... and I swung just after the plane started down the runway, and I hooked it badly. It hit the bubble and sounded like a gunshot. The pilot shut down quickly, and then turned around and headed back... slid up the cockpit cover and waved a white hanky.... he was laughing, so we started laughing too. As we walked down he fairway (after my second shot), he took off and waggled his wings at us.

Why do I get charged $14 trail fees when I ride with a member who has their own cart? Essentially, I would get charged $14 to walk 18 holes? Rip off. Tired of this happening to me. Third time this has happened. These guys owe me.
