The Club At Sonterra
The golf : Sonterra is private, and features two 18-hole
tracks on opposite sides of Loop 1604. The club got its start in 1985
when Bruce Devlin and Robert von Hagge completed a 7,070-yard layout that
features three famously difficult holes, then expanded when ownership
acquired the old Canyon Creek Country Club across the highway.
The North Course, also known as Sunburst, features outstanding
bent-grass greens and some extremely impressive terrain. Unlike many courses
in the area, this one lacks numerous trees, but makes up for it with loads
of fairway bunkers. The course opens with a monster dogleg right, 571-yard
par 5, which features a mean approach into an elevated green fronted by
bunkers. No. 5 is another tough par 5, but fun because of the blind tee
shot. The most scenic hole is No. 6, which plays 165 yards over a waterfall
and lake to a small green.
The South Course, also known as Deer Canyon, plays down in a valley
through large oaks, its signature being the numerous rock walls that come
into play. Those walls are most prominent on holes 1 and 17. For the most
part, this one is a traditional layout with small, mound-shaped greens.
There is no water on the South Course.
