Northern Hills Country ClubNorthern Hills opened in 1969 with a Joe Behlau design that plays to a par-71, 6,536-yards from the tips, featuring small, multi-level greens and tree-lined fairways.
Behlau didn't have much room to work with on this centrally located facility, so you'll notice that the front side rolls to the right, while the back nine works back to the opposite direction. Consequently, if your misses off the tee are flying in the right direction, you'll be able to keep it in play and avoid big numbers. Slices and fades work on the front, and draws and hooks survive on the back.
Everyone talks about the difficult par 3s, all of which require long irons. With the exception of two dogleg par 5s, the remainder of the holes play straightaway, providing the opportunity to flail away if you're hitting them straight.
Getting there : From Highway 410 east, take the Nacogdoches exit and turn left. Drive approximately 4 miles and the street turns into Bulverde. Bulverde changes into Scarsdale, and you will eventually see the course on the right.
