Oak Hills Country ClubOak Hills has as much character as any storied, private, member-owned country club in the world. This one dates back to the early 1920s when it was built by the famed A.W. Tillinghast, and has hosted 24 PGA Tour events won by every big name in the book. Guys like Arnold Palmer, Ben Crenshaw, Tom Watson, and Lee Trevino have won here, just to name a few.
Tillinghast's design was modified in 1984 by Jay Morrish, but it still retains the characteristic features created by the master. Tight, tree-lined fairways, large sand bunkers, strategically placed grass bunkers, and challenging doglegs all combine to require every golf shot imaginable. The course is immaculate, with perfectly trimmed old oak trees accented by meadow-like grass along the fairways, greens that roll smooth and fast, and fairways that are as lush as they come.
The course is known for its signature finishing holes on each side. Nos. 9 and 18 are both par 3s that involve elevated tee shots over water to well-guarded greens that are also somewhat elevated.
Getting there : From Loop 410 west, take the Fredericksburg Road exit and turn right. When you pass Callahan Road, turn left into the clubhouse parking lot.
