Crystal Falls Golf Club is an affordable, public course about 25 miles northwest of downtown Austin. The course is set through rugged and rocky Hill Country terrain and features both dramatic views and downhill tee shots. There are no sand bunkers here, but there's still plenty of trouble as the course is thickly wooded, has numerous water hazards, and many fairways are tight and lined on each side by forest or water.

It's not often that a Pete Dye-designed course would be considered the kinder, gentler of two courses at a 36-hole resort, but that's the case with the new AT&T Canyons Course at the TPC San Antonio and JW Marriott San Antonio Hill Country Resort & Spa. More than anything, the AT&T Canyons Course, as the name implies, provides great views of the Texas Hill Country.

Take a closer look at Wolfdancer Golf Club, a resort course near Austin that sits on former Native American land, once occupied by the Tonkawa tribe. The Republic Golf Club is one of San Antonio's newest and most highly acclaimed daily fee clubs of the last several years. Designed by Art Schaupeter in 2002, the course is set on the flatter side of the city in the southeast, and features wide fairways that are almost all tree lined.

Brackenridge Park Golf Course has been a San Antonio mainstay since 1915, when legendary "Golden Age" architect A.W. Tillinghast laid the course out. Since then, it has hosted some of the state's top events and players, and it recently underwent a major restoration.

The Westin La Cantera's Palmer Course was designed by Arnold Palmer and opened in 2001, set northwest of San Antonio in the heart of the Hill Country. The property used to construct this course is at many points more severe and undulating compared to the original Resort Course, which was built in 1995 and has since hosted the Valero Texas Open.

It's pretty rare to find a calm day on the south Texas coast, so fortunately, when Chris Cole and Stephen Caplinger designed South Padre Island Golf Club in Laguna Vista, Texas, they had the prevailing wind in mind. The semi-private club isn't pure links, but the individual holes are very much links-style, given that wind figured into the design of all of them.

The Ram Rock course at the Horseshoe Bay Resort is a Robert Trent Jones Sr. design from 1981 and the second of three golf courses he built at the Horseshoe Bay Resort in central Texas. Set on 147 hilly acres, Ram Rock is widely considered the most difficult of the three courses at the resort and features narrow fairways, large bunkering and many raised, bentgrass greens.
