The Texas "Hill Country" is generally considered the land west and south of Austin and down to San Antonio. Wolfdancer Golf Club in Lost Pines, located about 20 minutes east of Austin, tests this theory greatly. The course features a great deal of unexpected rolling, wooded and flowing topographical variance that makes the round zip along all too quickly.

It's an early verdict to be sure, but here's the lowdown: Old American Golf Club at The Tribute is most intriguing. It's a difficult but fair layout. Playing the proper tees is so important because the fairways and greens are surrounded by minefields that contain more than 100 bunkers. And since they are old school, you can forget about the perfect lies and low lips, which makes managing this course paramount.

How do you give a golf club designed to pay homage to the great courses of Scotland a true Scottish feel? You hire a Scotsman, of course. Which is exactly what The Tribute Golf Club near Dallas did when they brought Keith Erskine over from Royal Troon.

San Antonio is often associated with the battle cry "Remember the Alamo." But this year the call to arms for local golfers will be "Old Brack is back." San Antonio's historic Brackenridge Park Golf Course, an A.W. Tillinghast design from 1915, has reopened after an extensive renovation that closed this muni for more than a year.

When a resort hosts a PGA Tour event, it's usually a safe bet it's putting the players on the facility's top course. At the Westin La Cantera Resort in San Antonio's Hill Country, don't be so sure. While the pros tee it up on La Cantera's Resort Course, the newer and more dramatic Palmer Course may very well be worth your foursome's first look.

Think you're a good wind player? You ain't seen nothing until you've played South Padre Island Golf Club in south Texas. It's like stepping into a hurricane. Thank goodness designers Chris Cole and Stephen Caplinger knew what they were doing when they laid out the course. Each hole and the overall layout was planned to account for the prevailing wind.

Opened in 1971, El Angel is one of two courses at Rancho Viejo Resort & Country Club in Rancho Viejo, Texas. The other, which is probably considered the more championship level course, is the El Diablo Course. At 6,434 yards, the par-70 El Angel might seem like the meeker of the two, but not so fast - it's no pushover.

At 6,847 yards and flat, you might mistakenly believe that the Rancho Viejo Resort & Country Club's El Diablo Course is a pushover. But its devil moniker is aptly descriptive of its degree of difficulty. Plus, it is a par 70, so it plays like a 7,000-yard par 72 even in calm conditions. The course is fun and challenging.

When Robert Trent Jones Sr. designed the Ram Rock course at Horseshoe Bay Resort, there was a clear purpose: to give the resort some teeth. The result is one of Texas' most notoriously tough courses. Still, with a course that's this dang pretty, it's a pleasure to put up your dukes.

Just north of Austin, Forest Creek Golf Club features a solid and affordable championship golf experience that plays as long as you could ask for. But the course requires more finesse than it does length, especially with several severe doglegs and well-placed trees that require shot-shaping or keen placement on the shot prior.
