Destination: San Antonio
With several first-rate golf resorts in and around the city, San Antonio just might be Texas' best golf destination, especially when you consider all the other things to do here.
Its historical heritage includes cultural influences from Spain, Mexico, England, Germany and, of course, Texas. All is evident on the city's famed River Walk, which winds its way through downtown, lined with shops, restaurants, hotels and entertainment. Visitors can take a dinner cruise on a guided barge or simply sit at an outdoor cafe and people watch.
In recent years, the addition of theme parks such as Sea World and Six Flags Fiesta has upped the ante for San Antonio's stake in tourism. And the Alamo City is also world famous for its dining, which includes, arguably, the best collection of Tex-Mex restaurants in the state. There are brewery tours, festivals, more Spanish missions to see, and major sporting events.
But back to the golf: The TPC San Antonio now plays host to two high profile professional tour events: the Valero Texas Open on the PGA Tour, and the AT&T Championship on the Champions Tour. Another fine resort, the 36-hole Westin La Cantera, is the former home of the PGA Tour. And a classic A.W. Tillinghast-designed course, Brackenridge Park, used to be the home of the Texas Open, when the likes of Byron Nelson, Ben Hogan and Sam Snead graced its fairways. The recently restored Brackenridge Park is the jewel of the city's municipal golf system and Alamo Golf Trail.
There are dozens are other quality daily-fee courses, too, including The Quarry, which was carved out of an old cement quarry and surrounded by shops and restaurants. In short, San Antonio offers not only a great golf vacation, but a complete vacation for the whole family.
